Mr and Mrs Hilton from Rochdale are convinced that it was the Sika Sarnafil roofing membrane on their flat roof garage extension that saved their lives, during a fierce fire at their bungalow.

The single ply flat roof membrane had been installed 18 months earlier, by Sika Roof Assured registered installer Your Choice http://www.your-choice.uk.com/, on a garage extension at the couple’s bungalow home.  The fire was started by an electrical fault in the garage and could have quickly spread if it wasn’t for the self-extinguishing property of the Sika Sarnafil membrane on the roof which stopped it from taking hold and spreading.  Mr and Mrs Hilton were in bed when the fire broke out and are convinced that it was the fire resistant properties of the roof that did, indeed, stop the fire from spreading and saved their lives.

Mr Hilton said:  “It was my wife who woke up to the room full of smoke and she dragged me onto the landing.  She said ‘what saved my life and my house was that roofing’.  If it had been a normal felt roof the fire would have travelled across the roof and into the house and we wouldn’t be here now!”

Over quarter of a million fires were attended by fire services in 2010-2011 of which 16% were in the home. Using effective fire resistant materials and construction methods means that the numbers are decreasing, but Sika Roof Assured urges homeowners to ask their flat roofing contractor about the non combustible properties of the roofing materials they are using.

Sika Sarnafil’s PVC roofing membranes, used only by approved Sika Roof Assured installers for domestic applications, are treated with a fire retardant and are self-extinguishing. The membranes are fully compliant with roofing’s most significant fire safety requirements and can be used to achieve relevant Building Regulations approval.  Sika Sarnafil membranes have certification under the strict fire code standards of more than 20 countries throughout the world.  See the Sika Sarnafil Fire Performance Test here:

Chris Morris, Contracts Manager at Your Choice saw the damage the fire had caused:  “Luckily we don’t often get to see the damage caused by a household fire, but I was amazed when I visited Mr and Mrs Hilton’s home and saw just how well the Sika Sarnafil roofing system membrane had contained the fire. We know that the Sika Sarnafil single ply membrane has all the necessary fire approvals, but I truly didn’t realise how effective and fire resistant it was. I can well believe that it stopped a very nasty accident from happening as well as protecting the rest of the bungalow from extensive fire damage.”

Sika Roof Assured will be at the FIT Show, Stand 2-104, 16 – 18 April.
