We are pleased to announce the appointment of Anna Scothern as the new Executive Director of the National Home Improvement Council.

Anna has over 20 years’ experience in the housing and wider built-environment sectors. She is fully committed to re-energising the NHIC and making it once again both a valuable resource for its members and a national force to be reckoned with at government level, championing the needs of industry and the public right across the country.

Whilst at BRE Anna established the National Centre for Excellence in Housing, a JV with NHBC which was the precursor to the Zero Carbon Hub. She also set up the National Refurbishment Centre which supported industry partners with an ambition to raise the energy performance of the UK’s existing stock.

Following her appointment as Group Digital Director at BRE to deliver a digital transformation strategy, Anna collaborated on the reorganisation of the IT infrastructure function and led the development of the digital communications directorate for the organisation. Her extensive digital knowledge will be invaluable as the NHIC works towards engaging stakeholders and maximising ROI on Council communications.

Anna believes that the primary role of the NHIC should be to support members and their communities on all aspects of home improvement including energy and water usage, and assisting the most vulnerable in their homes through an understanding of the challenges they face.

Also on her agenda will be the need to drive forward the NHIC’s ongoing efforts to level the taxation playing-field with new build. Other campaigns are likely to focus on adaptation and resilience as the UK’s homes face ever-increasing demands on usage and the necessity of coping with extreme external weather effects such as flooding and storm damage.

Before joining BRE, Anna was Housing & Technical Performance Director at The Concrete Centre where she worked on thermal mass, acoustic RD’s and championed excellence in design. Anna started her career in construction with Cemex (then RMC) working as a Technical Lecturer and in Group Marketing & Communications.

Anna is a judge for the Housebuilding National and Product Awards, as well as a judge for Regional and National Constructing Excellence Awards and the British Homes Awards. In addition, she is Visiting Professor at Ulster University and a NED at Gentoo Green.

Manufacturers, service companies, trade associations, authorities or any other organisations involved in the home improvement sector who want to discuss the benefits of membership of the NHIC should contact Anna at or via social media @thenhic.
