Richard Lawton, Regional Sales Manager, Sika Sarnafil, the leading manufacturer of single ply roofing membranes, talks about the rise in popularity of the single ply membrane as a risk free roofing solution for domestic and commercial installations.

While flat roofs have for many years suffered from a poor reputation, the high performance, long lasting and aesthetically pleasing Sarnafil single ply membrane has kicked back and ‘ flat is back’ is now the hot topic for flat roofing solutions. Self builders and renovators are looking for products that tick all the boxes when it comes to meeting regulations, performance, and longevity. The flat roof option also gives homeowners the opportunity to be creative and achieve the contemporary styling that will give their property the ‘Grand Designs’ WOW factor. It is all about looks and lifespan.

Drainage and maintenance are always main concerns when it comes to a flat roof. Traditionally, flat roofs have had a reputation for being difficult to weatherproof but products such as the Sarnafil single ply membrane guarantee longer lifespans and durability. Ideally, all flat roofs should have a low (slight) fall to allow rainwater to drain from the roof. Part L Building regulations states a minimum fall of 1:80. However, particularly in refurbishment projects, this is not always achievable. Modern PVC single ply flat roofing, heat welded at every seam and either mechanically or adhered (designed in accordance with BS6399:Part 2) to the underlying surface, can cope with standing /ponding water without detriment to the product or, with the Roof Assured by Sarnafil single ply membrane, the guarantees. The fact that the membrane is secured and adhered to the roof structure also offers maximum protection from wind uplift . Sarnafil takes full responsibility for wind calculations on projects over 100m2.

“Sarnafil is a stabilized PV membrane not only engineered to form a stable waterproof covering, its performance is unaffected by expansion and contraction, but also protects against damaging solar rays and the very worst British weather. When the sun does decide to shine, a titanium dioxide top later provides optimum UV resistance and solar reflectivity. Sarnafil is vapour permeable to prevent blisters.”

The product is thermally and dimensionally stable. Surprisingly, flat roofs in this country can reach +80°C to -20°C, which is a huge shock to any product. Sarnafil is a stabilized PV membrane not only engineered to form a stable waterproof covering, its performance is unaffected by expansion and contraction, but also protects against damaging solar rays and the very worst British weather. When the sun does decide to shine, a titanium dioxide top later provides optimum UV resistance and solar reflectivity. Sarnafil is vapour permeable to prevent blisters.

Also steel reinforced details and a unique seal copes with building movement and guarantees a waterproof wall joint, that will not crack or fail  like traditional mortar, lead or sealant. Sarnametal steel reinforced edge trims are mechanically fixed to form a solid, storm resistant roof edge. The Sarnafil waterproofing is fusion welded to the Sarnafil trim to permanently seal the roof edge.

What benefits does a flat roof have over pitched designs? Cost is a priority on any project and the flatter or shallower the roof the cheaper it is to build. Flat roofs can be significantly less expensive to construct and are quicker to fit than a traditional pitched roof. If you take an average domestic flat roof of say 80 m2 – 100m2 it can probably be installed and finished within two days. With the new Sarnafil self adhered membrane, installation times on large projects can be reduced considerably.

From a design point of view, a flat roof can offer a wide variety of options to suit traditional and modern architectural styles. The low profile, architectural aesthetic of a flat roof is becoming increasingly popular with self builders and renovators who are looking for a sleek, contemporary look. On many property designs, a ‘ flat roof ’ is often far from being a horizontal at surface. It can be curved and / or at any angle from horizontal to vertical.

Again, at considerably lower costs than traditional materials, the single ply membrane can mimic a traditional lead roof appearance or that of a standing seam such as on a copper or zinc roof. We offer colour options of lead grey, copper patina (green) or copper brown (terracotta). The membrane is also suitable for the installation of timber decking or paving on top to create balconies and terraces or have a green roof installed.

Whatever the project, a strong culture of excellent training and working in partnership with our installers means they have the very best support at all stages. Today’s consumers have high levels of expectations. A happy customer is a loyal customer and a loyal customer is more likely to become an advocate for a product or service. The Sarnafil single ply membrane, literally, has our name written all over it. We do not want this product to fail, so we absolutely stand by our name.
