DGCOS Helps BBC TV’s Don’t Get Done Get Dom

Richard Christie, Chief Executive of the Double Glazing and Conservatory Ombudsman Scheme (DGCOS) appeared on BBC2 consumer rights programme, Don’t Get Done Get Dom on Monday 15th April.

Richard Christie advised the show on condensation in conservatories because the show featured a homeowner who had battled with an installer for four years, and had already employed an independent inspector to find out what was causing their excessive condensation and mould problems.

The installer was adamant the condensation was caused by the customer using a washing machine and tumble dryer in the conservatory. Condensation was not covered by their 10 year guarantee and as a result the company advised the room needed additional ventilation.

Dominic Littlewood, the show’s presenter, turned to DGCOS to find out more about condensation in conservatories.

Richard Christie explained that when installers deal with customers who say they have condensation or damp, it is important to establish which one it is. “Condensation is moisture appearing on a surface whereas damp is moisture that is actually within the substrate itself.”

In DGCOS’s experience condensation can occur in conservatories, but the majority of cases condensation is not caused by the conservatory itself. They are to do with the way that the conservatory is being used.

Richard added “conservatories are not considered habitable rooms, you definitely shouldn’t be looking to use them as kitchens, bedrooms or bathrooms.”

“Anything that’s going to put moisture into the atmosphere is definitely something that you should avoid doing.”

After the BBC2 consumer rights programme intervened, the installer employed an independent inspector to investigate. The report concluded that the customer was not at fault and the company rectified the problems.
